Camera AirPods Code Reveals Image Capture Resolution, Status Light, Person Detection, and More

Apple is working on camera-equipped AirPods, as indicated by various reports and a demo video of them in action discovered earlier this week. The video was found by MacRumors in the macOS Tahoe 26.7 release candidate, but it turns out there are even more details in the code.

MacRumors forum member pdfu has discovered a hidden macOS framework called "AccessorySensorManager" that manages sensor data from the AirPods when they are connected to a Mac. That's turned up the following information:

  • AirPods designed to capture paired color images: Code indicates the left and right earbuds have individual camera sensors that return synchronised RGB still images of up to 1 megapixel with matching frame IDs, giving Visual Intelligence the same scene from two angles. This doesn't rule out other sensors like infrared cameras, but they aren't mentioned in the code.
  • AirPods support periodic image capture but not video: The cameras take internal still frames for Visual Intelligence to process, rather than "taking pictures" or recording video. In "active" mode, the framework can request a synced pair of images, or it can receive a capture rate, where pairs of stills are continually sent at the specified rate.
  • Active and passive capture modes use different resolutions: In "active" mode, likely triggered by the user via Siri, the AirPods capture a 640x640 image and return a processed 1024x1024 image. "That's about 0.4 megapixels of sampled image data, and a little over 1 megapixel for the output frame," pdfu explains. In "passive" mode, they capture a 320x320 image that can return a 320×320 or 512×512 output. "These are capture-specific resolutions, and the physical sensor's native resolution may be larger," adds pdfu.
  • Passive mode appears intended for background environmental awareness: The framework mentions contextual conditions like nearby speech, changes in the surrounding audio, posture changes, head rotation, and movement outside a defined area. It's not clear from the code whether every condition triggers a camera capture.
  • AirPods account for continual head movement: The framework includes lens distortion correction, dual-camera calibration, and camera-to-motion sensor calibration. It can also reject images affected by excessive movement or an occluded view.
  • Some processing happens directly on AirPods: The code mentions "peripheral inference," or on-device detection of whether a person is in view.
  • Each AirPod likely has a capture indicator light: The framework contains code that allows it to remotely control a hardware indicator and its brightness, suggesting the AirPods have a light to let other people know when they are capturing still images.

It's worth noting that the AirPods that were shown in the demo video were a version of the AirPods Pro 3 with cameras, which have a B790 codename. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has said that Apple no longer plans to release this model, and instead is working on a new generation of AirPods with cameras, codenamed B798. This makes it likely that the discovered framework is related to the canceled model. It also underlines that the findings show how Apple's camera-equipped AirPods could work, rather than a guarantee of the final product's features.

Gurman says the AirPods are planned for 2027, and could potentially launch alongside the 20th-anniversary iPhone. Meanwhile, Apple is expected to introduce AirPods 5 at its "Surprise and Shine" event on September 9, offering them in both noise-cancelling and non-noise-cancelling versions.

AirPods 5 Teardown: Batteries Removable, Case Still Tough

Tuesday September 29, 2026 2:38 pm PDT by
Repair site iFixit today took apart Apple's AirPods 5 for one of its traditional teardown videos. It turns out the new AirPods are slightly more repairable than prior models, but it's still not a simple home fix. The AirPods 5 use pronged batteries that Apple previously used in the AirPods 3, but not the AirPods 4. The battery can be removed with a "nifty pair of tongs," and iFixit says the...

Am i the only one who is tired of this surveillance culture, with cameras everywhere ? Cameras in your phones, in your glasses, in your headphones, in your watches, soon you won’t be able to buy a Tshirt without a built-in mini-camera filming everything around you in 360 degree angle.

It’s a self-inflicted Orwellian world. We’re willingly building a Panopticon to live in.

If they release this, every decent gym will ban (probably all) AirPods. Rightfully, too! What an own-goal over something nobody is asking for.

This is the classic case of taking a relatively small group of people and using their legitimate needs as justification for introducing more surveillance technology into everyone's everyday lives.

I completely understand that blind and visually impaired people could genuinely benefit from camera technology. If a camera on an AirPod can help identify objects, read text, navigate more safely or become more independent, that's a meaningful benefit. But that doesn't automatically justify putting the same technology into everyone's AirPods, especially when they have powerful tracking and recording capabilities and people wear them everywhere, from the gym to public bathrooms. I mean, what could possibly go wrong?

We already have cameras and microphones built into almost every device we own: phones, laptops, watches, TVs, cars, smart speakers, doorbells and now potentially our earbuds. It's always marketed as "convenience", accessibility or safety, but the trade-off is that we're gradually normalising sensors being around us all the time and creating enormous amounts of data about our lives, our homes, where we go and what we are doing.

Seriously, how many guys go into a public bathroom, stand at a urinal and still have their AirPods in? I don't want someone next to me suddenly having the ability to record my private parts. The same concern applies to Meta's camera glasses. Once cameras become something people casually wear on their face or ears, it becomes much harder to know when you're being recorded.

Then there is the obvious question: what happens if these devices are hacked? What if a serious vulnerability is discovered? What if a government demands access or pressures Apple for a backdoor? Maybe none of that happens, but once you put cameras and microphones on devices people wear literally everywhere, you're creating another potential avenue for surveillance that simply didn't need to exist before.

There are smarter ways to solve the accessibility problem without making everyone adopt the same surveillance technology. Apple could create dedicated AirPods specifically for blind and visually impaired users, with specialised hardware and accessibility features, perhaps with a unique design, colour or price point so everyone knows they aren't typical AirPods.

That way, the people who genuinely need the technology get the benefits, without forcing everyone else to accept another camera and microphone as a normal part of everyday life at the expense of losing more of their own privacy.

Why the hell would I want cameras on my AirPods? I just want them to have better sound, be more comfortable and have better ANC. Because they’re headphones?
